Har Ki Dun - A Trekking Paradise

Har Ki Dun is a cradle-shaped valley located at the base of the Fateh Parvat at an altitude of 3566mt.

The valley is a paradise for trekkers, nature lovers and bird watchers. The area is rich in flora and fauna. Opaque forests of pines and dazzling mountain peaks
encircle the valley. The trek will take you to one of the least discovered areas of Garhwal Himalayas. The valley has a backdrop of snowy Himalayan mountain peaks and dense jungles of devdar, pine and confer. The Tons River makes meandering loops at this place which increases the beauty. At Netwar village, there is the convergence of the Rupin and Supin rivers. After the junction of the Rupin and Supin rivers, the river is named as the Tons River. You can enjoy river rafting on the Tons river.

The valley is sprinkled with Himalayan flowers and looks vibrant during the monsoon season. The trekking in the valley is rated as moderate to medium difficulty levels. One should be bodily fit for this trek.

Legend of Har Ki Dun Valley:

 Har Ki Dun is in the valley of the Swargarohini Peak. It is a local belief that Yudhishthir, the eldest of the Pandavas was sent to heaven with a dog from the peak of Swargarohini. The ancestors of this area were said to be under the reign of the Pandavas and Kauravas, the mythological royal warriors and kings in the epic Mahabharata. The people who live in the Mori region are the followers of Kauravas who were considered the anti-heroes in Mahabharata.

Best time to visit: Best time for trekking here is from June to October. During this season the beautiful flowers cover the valley and it looks very amazing. During the remaining seasons of the year the area remains either very cold or wet.

Facts about the trek:

The altitude is of 11512ft approximately in the campsite of Har Ki Dun. There are easy-medium slopes. The steep gradient trek starts from the forests and meadows of Govind National Park to Har Ki Dun Camp. You should expect a rocky land from Seema to Osla and the patches of snow on the way to the Jaundhar glacier. The trek in Har Ki Dun is ideal for people who are new to trekking.

 The trekking in the valley involves the following:
Sankri to Taluka- 14km
Taluka to Osla- 13km
Osla to Har Ki Dun- 12km

Accommodation in Har Ki Dun:

 Accommodation facilities in Har Ki Dun are provided by the Forest Rent House and GMVN guest house. Carrying tents for camping is the best option because there are several astonishing camping locations. Options for accommodations are also available before Har Ki Dun at Seema, Sankri, Taluka and Osla.

How to trek:
  • Guides and porters: They can be hired from Deharadun or Uttarkashi
  • Weather: At night the campsite may experience the temperature dipping to 5 degrees- 0 degree Celsius. Temperature remains pleasant at the day-time.
  • Permits: Permits are not required for the valley trekking.

Tourist places nearby:

Jamdhar Glacier and Morinda Tal are the nearby places that you can visit. While trekking in Har Ki Dun valley, you can also visit the temple dedicated to Duryodhan, at Osla. Ruinsara Tal-a high altitude lake, serves as a significant tourist jaunt from the Har Ki Dun valley.

How to reach:

By rail: The nearest railway station to Sankri is Dehradun (190kms)
By road: Buses to Dehradun are available from Anand Vihar ISBT. Distance of Delhi to Sankri is 440km by road.
