The best time to obtain holiday work in New Zealand is over the summer (Northern hemisphere winter), where you are likely to get casual work in the horticulture industry. The season starts with berry-picking (strawberries, blueberries, black berries, black currents etc) from November to February, then on to fruit-picking (apples, peaches, nectarines, Kiwi-fruit) from February to April, and then onto vineyards (picking grapes) in April and May.
This is a very pleasant way to have a working holiday, and you will get to meet a number of people from all around the World, and see New Zealand at the same time.
In addition to this, there is always farm work, particularly on dairy farms, from August through to May. The disadvantage of this would be that you would need to make a longer-term commitment to a farm workers position, and it would not offer the flexibility of fruit-picking. Most dairy farmers would require you to work for a minimum term of 3 months, and time off would be limited to one day per week.
The advantage of these options is that accommodation is normally provided, and so your only costs will be travel (you are best to buy a cheap vehicle), food, drink and holiday attractions such as adventure tourism.
Another option would be to look for jobs in Christchurch, which is starting the re-build after the earthquake in 2011. If you are young and fit, there will be lots of building labourer jobs, however if you are not a physical type, then there will also be many jobs associated with the re-build over the coming years. In fact it is estimated that there will be a requirement for an additional 20,000 workers associated with the re-build that they say will take 20 years to complete.
Another area where you will find holiday work in New Zealand is in the hospitality industry. As there are lots of tourists visiting New Zealand over the summer, this always provides a good avenue for jobs in hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as in tourist resorts. The ski season (from July to October), also provides good employment opportunities. The best places for tourism jobs are Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown.
Another option is to work on cruise ships which will be active around New Zealand and Australian waters over the summer months.
